The World of Dance
Footwear
To enjoy dancing you do need to make sure that you are dressed comfortably so that you can focus on the experience and not be distracted by the thought that your shoe could potentially fly through the air when you next execute a double spin.
What ever footwear you choose, consider the following;
- When you purchase shoes, don’t consider ‘breaking them in on the dance floor’. It probably won’t be the shoes that break, it could be the pain barrier. If they don’t fit when you are in the shop, why should the dance floor be any different?
- Your shoe should fit like a glove as the movement of dance could cause rubbing or blisters. Worse cause scenario, you loose your shoe in the middle of the dance floor and have to hop around, in between fellow dancers trying to retrieve it. Make sure your shoe is enclosed or has a strap or laces to keep it on your foot. Dancing with your toes curled up to try and keep your shoes on means you are only thinking about your self preservation and not the fun you are having
Girls – heel size. If you don’t regularly wear heels, we wouldn’t suggest you change the habit of a life time just for dancing. Increased heel height, changes your natural body position and posture, which in turn affects your balance when you turn or spin. If you do choose to have a heel, you can select different heights, styles and heel surface area for more stability. - For comfort, we suggest the fewer seems the better as this will reduce the likelihood of rubbing
- To reduce any knee problems, we recommend that the sole of the shoe is either leather or a non grip rubber compound as this means your shoe will not stick to the floor as you start to spin putting stress on the knee joint as you twist. Professional dance shoes and trainers are constructed to deal with this. Exercise trainers and most outdoor shoes are designed to provide grip, thus aren’t suitable for dancing in.
Dance shoes. It is recommended that you don’t wear your dance shoes outside, especially if they have leather soles. The leather or rubber compound can pick up grit and could be damaged if got wet.
After care of leather soles is important for the longevity of the shoes. As time goes by the soles become shiny and need to be brushed using a metal suede brush to remove the dirty that is compacting in the leather. If not brush, the soles become slippery and will not help your dancing confidence.
